Our Scars May Look Alike

It’s not easy putting yourself out there. Being vulnerable is both liberating and terrifying all at the same time. It has rewards and consequences; much like anything in life. It causes you to connect, or eventually disconnect with others. It can evoke healing, or create scars. Being vulnerable leaves a door open for someone to come in, or makes you slam the door in judgment and ridicule's face. It is the gift of joy and the bearer of bad news. Being vulnerable is all about perspective. How you perceive things determines how you experience life.

When I decided to share my story in my newly published book entitled, "Unclothed Memoir of a Naked Soul," I was petrified. I feared judgment and ridicule from others. I feared what others may say after reading about some of my deepest and darkest secrets. I also feared how others may respond when they discovered that I had a dark and painful past full of ugly parts of myself. Yet, when I finally decided to release the fear and activate my faith, I realized that being vulnerable by sharing my story, was probably my greatest accomplishment to date. It gave me the opportunity to show others they are not alone in this journey called life. I was able to articulate how certain experiences affected me and why I made choices which often times lead to unfavorable outcomes and circumstances. I was also able to express myself in a way I had never been able to in all my life. Writing this book saved my life. It healed me, transformed me, and ultimately changed the trajectory of my life.

Being vulnerable is not a bad thing. It doesn’t have to be a painful experience. If we can all be open and honest with one another, we may soon realize as the late Maya Angelou said, “We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.” I challenge you to step outside of your comfort zone and experience life in a new and different way. You already know what life is like doing the things that brought you to this moment. Why not try doing something different, that may cause you to experience life in a new and refreshing way?
